A Heat pump looks like a hot water storage cylinder or tank and sits outside your property and is then connected to your hot water and or heating supply. A mixture of anti-freeze and water is pumped around the ground in a loop and absorbs the naturally occurring heat in the ground itself.
The water mixture is then compressed and runs through a heat exchanger (the efficient part) which then extracts the heat and transfers it to the pump itself. All hot water and heating systems have pros and cons so no one solution is 100% perfect. With a heat pump, the disadvantages are mainly two-fold.
• The first is that in very cold temperatures they become less efficient and so require more electricity (but still hugely more efficient than any other system.
• The second is that if the air filter becomes clogged or blocked it can quickly render the system useless but simple care and maintenance will easily avoid this issue (aircon systems have the same issue).
• The last issue is cost, the relatively high upfront cost is more than gas or electric systems but the reduction in energy bills more than makes up for this, especially considering current price rises and the 15-year lifespan of a heat pump
